Generative Engine Optimization

GEO

Definition

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of optimizing content so AI answer engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews retrieve, cite and accurately represent it in their generated responses.

Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of making content more likely to be retrieved, cited and accurately represented in answers produced by AI systems such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google’s AI Overviews. The term comes from a 2023 research paper that found adding citations, quotations and statistics to content raised its visibility in generative answers.

What is generative engine optimization?

Aggarwal and colleagues introduced GEO as a framework to help content creators improve their visibility in generative engine responses, built a benchmark of 10,000 queries (GEO-bench) and reported that GEO methods can boost visibility by up to 40%.1 Unlike classic SEO, the “result” is a synthesized paragraph; success means your page is cited, quoted or paraphrased accurately in it.

Formula

AI citation rate=Answers citing your domain ÷ Total answers across tracked prompts and engines

A fixed set of questions your buyers actually ask

What actually improves visibility in AI answers?

Method tested in the GEO paperEffect reported
Quotation additionAmong the top methods (30–40% relative gain on position-adjusted word count)
Statistics additionAmong the top methods
Cite sourcesAmong the top methods
Keyword stuffingLittle to no improvement; below baseline on position-adjusted word count

Google’s guidance for its own AI features is deliberately plain: there are no additional requirements or special optimizations needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode; a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, and you do not need AI text files, new machine-readable files or special schema markup. Traffic from these features is counted in Search Console’s Performance report under the “Web” search type.2 In practice, the content habits that help GEO (answer-first paragraphs, precise definitions, sourced numbers) are the same ones that help search snippets.

Worked example

A B2B team tracks 200 prompts across 3 engines each week: 600 answers. Their domain is cited in 84, a 14% citation rate; their main competitor is cited in 132 (22%). After rewriting their 20 most relevant pages with answer-first ledes, sourced statistics and FAQ blocks, the citation rate climbs to 19% over two months. Illustrative numbers.

Common mistakes

  • Measuring with one-off manual prompts. Answers vary between runs; use a fixed prompt set and repeat it.
  • Chasing tricks like keyword stuffing, which the GEO study found gave little to no improvement. The paper also found that the best method varies by domain, so test on your own prompts.1
  • Ignoring accuracy. Being cited with an outdated price or a wrong definition is a liability; monitor what the answer says, not just whether you appear.

How to track GEO in Kimo

Kimo’s Command center shows AI-answer citation rate and share of voice next to Search Console clicks and GA4 referral traffic from AI assistants, so you can see whether visibility turns into visits. For the full playbook, read GEO: how to show up in AI answers and the SEO funnel template.

Frequently asked questions

Is GEO different from SEO?

It shares SEO’s foundations (crawlable, indexed, authoritative content) but measures a different outcome: being cited or represented inside AI-generated answers rather than ranking in a list of links.

What is AEO?

Answer engine optimization is a near-synonym used for the same goal: optimizing to be the source behind direct answers, including AI answers and featured snippets.

How do I measure GEO?

Run a fixed set of buyer prompts across the engines that matter on a schedule, record whether and how your domain is cited, and track the citation rate and share of voice over time alongside AI referral traffic.
