Charts

Pick the right chart, configure series, axes and formatting, and understand the chart types available in Kimo, from KPI tiles to maps.

Kimo picks a sensible chart for every query, but you are always in control. This page lists the available chart types, when to use each, and the settings that matter most for readable dashboards.

Chart types

TypeUse forAvoid when
KPIOne number with a delta and sparklineYou need a breakdown
Line / AreaChange over time, up to 5 seriesCategories have no order
BarComparing categories; ranked listsMore than ~15 categories
Stacked barPart-to-whole over timeComparing inner segments precisely
FunnelOrdered conversion stepsSteps are not sequential
TablePrecise values, exportsShowing a trend
MapRegions, points, tracksLocation is not the point

Automatic selection

When a query has a time dimension, Kimo defaults to a line chart. One categorical dimension produces a sorted bar chart; two produce a stacked bar or a table depending on cardinality. A single value becomes a KPI. Override the choice from the chart menu; Kimo remembers it for that tile.

Series and colors

Colors are assigned from the workspace palette in a fixed order, and the same category always keeps the same color across charts on a dashboard (Enterprise is always blue, everywhere). Status colors (green, amber, red) are reserved for status and never used for categories.

Axes and formatting

  • Y axes start at zero for bars, always. Line charts may zoom; enable Start at zero to force it.
  • Number formats come from the measure definition, so currency and percentages are consistent.
  • Dual axes are not supported by design. Put two measures with different units in two tiles side by side.
  • Annotations (launches, incidents) can be added from any point and appear on every chart using that measure.

Chart configuration as code

Tiles exported with kimo dashboards export are plain JSON, which makes reviewing and templating dashboards easy.

tiles/mrr-by-plan.json
{  "type": "line",  "title": "MRR by plan",  "query": {    "model": "subscriptions",    "measures": ["mrr"],    "dimensions": ["started_at.month", "plan"]  },  "series": { "topN": 5, "other": true },  "yAxis": { "zero": true },  "annotations": "inherit"}

Accessibility

Every chart has a data table view (press T with the chart focused), keyboard navigation between points, and an auto-generated text summary read by screen readers. The default palette is tested for common forms of color blindness.
